Dalit Women, Dalit Community Leaders & Human Rights Defenders' Consultation with UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders

Ms. Margret Sekaggya, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders arrived in India on her official visit from 10 – 21 January 2011. NCDHR coordinated the deposition of Dalit Human Rights Defenders for her, who testified their agonies and harassment at the hands of authorities and dominant castes for protecting dalit human rights.

The Human Rights Council appointed Ms. Margret Sekaggya as the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders. The Special Rapporteur is to seek, receive, examine and respond to information on the situation of human rights defenders; establish cooperation and conduct dialogue with governments and other interested actors on the promotion and effective implementation of the Declaration; recommend effective strategies better to protect human rights defenders; follow up on these recommendations; and integrate a gender perspective throughout her work.  The Special Rapporteur focuses on the security and protection of human rights defenders, challenges that human rights defenders face regarding the security and the environment, situations of insecurity and physical protection programmes at the national, regional and global levels.
