Workshop on Violence against Dalit Women

The two days Workshop on Violence against Dalit Women was organized on the 11th and 12th February 2006 at Carmel Niwas, Okhla, New Delhi. The main purposes of the

Workshop were to initiate (i) the process of legal intervention on atrocities against Dalits and (ii) the preparation for the National Conference on Violence against Dalit Women on the 7th and 8th March 2006.


The Participants included women and men Activists, Advocates and the Recapacitation Activists from Bihar, Rajasthan, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat and Delhi.

The Secretary of the newly formed Violence Against Dalit Women Cell, Sr. Urmila welcomed the participants while the Convenor, Dr. Vimal Throat explained the reasons and the urgent need to form the new Cell to protest violence against Dalit women in the country.

Dr. Prasad guided the team to find the gaps in the implementation of the SC/ST (POA) Act. Senior advocate Mr. Colin Gonsalves (HRLN) explained the salient features or the special SC/ST Act Draft which was to be presented to the court. Mr. Rajesh, Advocate (HRLN) outlined the methodology involved in preparing Statements while preparing the cases.


Mr. Paul Divakar motivated the Team to finalize the list of Survivors and urged them to give full cooperation for the National Conference on Violence Against Dalit Women to be held on the 7th and 8th March 2006.
