International Womens Day Celebration

Jaipur March 8, 2009: All India Dalit Mahila Adhikar Manch and other Dalits activists celebrated the International women’s Day in Jaipur, by way of organizing a massive rally, which started at the Shaheed Smarak Park and ended at the Civil Fatak.

AIDMAM also handed a memorandum to the Governor S.K. Singh, which demands 33 per cent women reservation in parliament, ending the violence against Dalit women and extending protection to them.

“I am a Dalit women, my rights are constantly violated in the society, and I am here to raise my voice, so that the state hears my voice,” told a participant in the Rally. They raised slogans like “Leke rahenge, leke rahenge apna adhikar, leke rahenge, Hum Dalit Naari hain phool nahin chingaari hain etc. 

Vimal Thorat, National Convener, All India Dalit Mahila Adhikar Manch (AIDMAM) said in the meeting that silence is the root cause of the plight of women. Women can’t get justice until they break their silence. Women from different villages of Rajasthan shared their stories in the meeting,Jaipur meeting how they are facing discrimination as Dalit women.

Dalit women’s problem is three fold. As a poor person, as a woman and as a dalit, said Prof. Thorat. She also said that a nation’s level of development and level of governance is reflected in the level of development of its women folk.  Therefore Govt. will have to ensure the rights of women in this country.
