Justice for Dalit women

by safdar — last modified 2015-02-09 15:37

You have reached the web page of a vibrant and evolving campaign that is organizing to resist the most cruel forms of violence and discrimination against women born into lowest caste groups in India. All India Dalit Mahila Adhikar Manch is a platform for women from the community to escalate our voices for justice. From here are born Dalit women activists who have risen to build the struggle for self respect and dignity. We are the fierce young women, who are the force behind the assertions and the struggles. We are the spark. We are the true revolution. We believe in the words of Dr. B.R Ambedkar who said, ". . ours is a battle not for wealth or for power. It is a battle for freedom. It is a battle for the reclamation of the human personality."

Dalit Mahila Swabhiman Yatra is urging communities to create conditions for change at the local level and strengthen Dalit women leadership. The first phase of the yatra travelled through Haryana, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa and Maharashtra. The yatra culminated on 12 March, 2014, in Delhi with a public meeting where women shared their experiences and expressed collective declaration for their rights and dignity. The second phase of the yatra began in Bihar in September 2014 and then travelled through Madhya Pradesh in October 2014 bringing more and more Dalit women together. While the first phase focused on sexual violence and challenging the impunity, the second phase of the yatra aims at building Dalit women leadership. It also aims at establishing linkages between violence and larger community assertions for land, water and other resources, including access to political power.
